Zimmer to Build a Polyester Plant in Mexico

FRANKFURT, Feb. 9, 1998 — Frankfurt/Main, a company of the Lurgi group, has been awarded a contract by the man-made fiber manufacturer Fibras Quimicas S.A. to build a polyester spinning and texturizing plant in Monterrey. Total investment value amounts to over DM 100 million.

The contract covers a 36,000 tons/year high-speed spinning facility to produce by the direct spinning process partially oriented yam (POY), a 24,000 tons/year high-speed texturizing facility for the production of draw texturized yarn (DTY) as well as an integrated automatic bobbin handling installation including online quality control monitoring systems.

Besides the process technology, the Frankfurt engineering and construction company will supply engineering and equipment and be responsible for the supervision of erection and start-up.

The source of the polymer melt will be the Zimmer-built I 10,000 tons/year continuous polyester polycondensation plant commissioned at the Monterrey site in March 1996.

Fibras Quimicas S.A., which commercializes its products worldwide under the "Akra" trade name, is a company of the ALPEK Group. ALPEK is the petrochemical arm of ALFA, one of the largest Mexican corporations.
