Survey Shows Teens Take Fashion Cues From One Another

Marshalls reveals the season's hottest trends for back-to-school!

FRAMINGHAM, Mass., July 26 /PRNewswire — (Fall 1999) — It's just about time to head back to school, and as teens gear up for their first day, they're keeping a keen eye on what styles their friends are wearing. According to a recent survey conducted for Marshalls by Opinion Research Corporation, 63% of teens felt that friends and peers are the most important factor influencing their fashion choices. That far outweighs magazines (10%), television (7%), music stars and videos (5%), movies (3%), family members (3%), models (1%) and other factors (5%). A mere 3% of responding teens felt there was no influence of their fashion choices.

So if kids are creating their own fashion statements, what are they wearing? Following are some hot trends from Marshalls, one of the nation's leading off-price retailers, for back-to-school.

Say goodbye to the super baggy look and hello to cleaner lines — today's best-dressed teens have cleaned up their act! Flat-front pants with straight legs paired with tailored shirts with 3/4 length sleeves are the look for Fall 99.

The baseball shirt makes a huge comeback this year — on and off the playing field. Junior girls will be wearing the baseball look, with solid sleeves and body in contrasting colors, in knits and sweaters. Teenage boys will be wearing branded athletic tops and nylon active pants.

Students making a statement with the bohemian look will be wearing dark denim jeans with embroidered and beaded accents, and deep natural colors like paprika, the hottest new shade of red.

The “utility” trend is one of the hottest looks for back-to-school. Teen girls will be wearing pants and skirts with cargo pockets galore, kangaroo pouches, drawstring waists and zippers. Teenage boys will be wearing cargo pants and carpenter jeans worn with chest-stripe tops to complete the look. Don't forget the accessories like hands-free bags and the best brands in backpacks.

The next James Van Der Beek, Ricky Martin, Sarah Michelle Geller and Brandy are among us! These teens will be wearing the hippest new looks of the fall season...for juniors a shrug paired with flat front stretch pants . . . and for guys a chest stripe cotton jersey and carpenter jeans with a lug-soled boot.

“For teens, the most important thing is to express their personality,” says Sue Vitters, fashion expert for Marshalls. “At Marshalls, smart young shoppers will find lots of great trends to choose from, at prices a lot less than department and specialty stores.”
